What do you do after a car accident?

car accident

Immediately after the crash, assess whether there are any injuries that need attention. Call 911 and report the crash location and if there are inquries that require medical attention. Caring for injured victims is a priority but if it is beyond your capability, seek out someone who has medical training who may be able to assist.

If you are unsure whether they can be moved safely, turn off any electronics such as the ignition and keep them calm until ambulance help arrives.

Assess whether there are any immediate dangers to survivors such as passing traffic, fallen hydro wires or leaking fuel. Do not stand on the road to assess damage to the vehicles.

Photograph and / or sketch the crash scene if it is safe to do so.

If the vehicles are not severely damaged, move them off the traveled portion of the road. If the damage is less than $ 1,000 it is not necessary to report to the police unless you believe there is some sort of criminal activity involved such as drunk driver, false paperwork or if the driver cannot produce any documents for themselves or the vehicles. Minor crashes need only to be reported to the collision centre. Call 416-745-3301 for nearest collision centre location.

Find a safe place well away from traffic to wait for the police

Exchange information with the other parties involved. Write down all the driver’s information including address and driver’s licence number, insurance company and policy number and check to see if the ownership information matches the vehicle they are driving. If there are witnesses, ask them if you can have their contact information so you can pass that along to the police.

Should the other driver involved insist that the crash not be reported to the police, be very suspicious. If they offer to have your car towed and repaired at their buddy’s garage, politely turn them down as you are likely to have more trouble than you thought.

Call your insurance broker or company right away.
